It was Chinese New Year. David and his family decided to return to his grandparents' house a few states away to meet up with their relatives. To many people, Chinese New Year is just an occasion where one could gather with family and relatives, eat and chat till dawn breaks the next day, but to David, last year's Chinese New Year was the most memorable occasion. Why such memory of a festival? Last year...... ''Hey David, want to play firecrackers with me? They're the newest stuff in the shops! '' David's little cousin, Yo Jun asked imploringly. David rejected his cousin's offer without a thought, as he wanted to go inside the house to talk to grandmother about his life. Yo Jun was utterly disappointed as David was his favourite cousin, and to him, David was the best cousin in the world. How he wished that David was his elder brother, so they could play together all the time. Holding a can of Coca Cola, he made a beeline to grandma's room. He opened the shrieking door and saw grandma sitting on the floor, her face breaking into a grin. ''Hey grandma, how's everything going? '' asked David with his ravishing smile. Grandma was really happy to see his grandson all grown up, ready to enter university and follow his father's footsteps, that is to be a doctor. Remembering the old times where David was still young and she carried David in her arms and caressed him, grandma's eyes became brimming with tears. David sat on the chair dumbfounded, thinking if he said the wrong things. Quickly, he took out a piece of tissue from his pocket and wiped grandma's tears. ''What's wrong, grandma? Did I say anything that hurt you? '' David asked, his fingers fidgeting. ''No... It's just... Time flies really quickly, you know? It's like blinking my eyes, and you're already so tall, so grown up... '' grandma said with a melancholy tone. David empathised with grandma. He too, missed the days where he was under the care of grandma. His parents were busy working and grandma came to live with them and took care of David and his siblings, but now grandma lives in her hometown, together with David's uncle. ''You know, grandma, life is full of beauty, and I really do appreciate your care for me. Without you, I wouldn't be who i am right now, and I still love you, wholeheartedly. '' David held grandma's hands tightly. ''I know... You're such a good boy. Promise me, that you'll slog through your university days and never drop out of school, okay? '' said grandma. ''Ok, I promise you, grandma. '' David said with a delighted grin, crossing his little finger with grandma's, indicating that he promised grandma that he would study hard. Just when grandma showed a jaw-cracking yawn, David heard firecrackers banging, followed by a loud shriek. It sounded like Yo Jun's voice and gooseflesh were all over grandma's arms. David dashed out of the room and went out of the house immediately. David was horror-struck. He couldn't believe his eyes. Yo Jun lied on the floor unconscious and his arm was bleeding profusely. David stood there, petrified. ''Oh my goodness! '' David's aunt exclaimed, seeing her son lying on the floor, not moving at all. Yo Jun's dad hurriedly carried Yo Jun into the car with his arms. They went straight to the hospital, cutting through every traffic. Along the way, Yo Jun's mother was sobbing heavily. ''Drive faster!! Can't you see that he's dying!? '' Yo Jun's mother shouted hysterically. She was really scared. David was in the car too. He felt guilty. He felt that it was his fault that he didn't play with Yo Jun and that he didn't tell Yo Jun that it was dangerous to play with firecrackers. He was really dismayed, afraid that Yo Jun might not wake up anymore. He started to break into tears. Yo Jun was rushed into the operation room. Outside the operation room was Yo Jun's family, David and grandma. They couldn't sit still, and kept walking around. David held grandma's hands tightly. He could see that grandma's eyes were glimmering with tears. He didn't want anything bad to happen to Yo Jun too. They both cuddled each other silently. ''I told you that Yo Jun shouldn't be playing firecrackers. I told you that it was dangerous! Now look at this! It's all your fault! What if he loses his hand? What if he dies!? '' David's aunt screamed at Uncle Poh Ming, who was now sulky-looking. ''Well I didn't know that this would happen! How could you blame me!? It's part of YOUR fault too for not taking good care of him. Do you think that I wanted this to happen!? '' shouted uncle, losing his temper. Just when a nurse came over and told them to keep their voices down, the doctor came out of the operation room. ''Mr. and Mrs. Lim, your son has a fractured arm, and he needs to stay in the hospital for a week. Please be more careful next time. Oh, you can see him now, please follow me. '' said the doctor, heaving a sigh. They followed the doctor and went into a room with many other children. Yo Jun was lying on his bed at the end of the room, his heart-shaped face pale. Without hesitation, David went straight to Yo Jun and started to hold his other arm which wasn't injured. ''I'm really sorry, Yo Jun. I should've stopped you from playing firecrackers. I should've played other games with you. I should've... '' David said, feeling exasperated. ''No, David, it isn't your fault. It's my fault for not listening to mummy. I'm sorry, mummy. '' Yo Jun said softly. ''Thank God it was a minor injury, Yo Jun. Thank God! '' said Yo Jun's mother happily, although still somewhat angry about the accident. It was time to go home, and uncle Poh Ming drove David and grandma home while aunt stayed in the hospital to look after Yo Jun. David cuddled grandma and comforted her, saying that everything was going to be alright. So, this was the incident that made last year's Chinese New Year memorable to David. Sitting in the car, staring out the side window at the uncountable 'whizzing' trees beside the road, he wondered how Yo Jun was now......
