Mary Lennox lived in India with her parents, but when they suddenly died, she had to go to England. In Yorkshire, in Misselthwaite Manor lived her only relative, Lord Craven.
It is difficult to say that Mary was a good girl. She was a spoiled and selfish child. She used to be alone and she didn’t believe people around her. Mary had no friends, o things to love and take care of, no close people to talk to. She walked alone, explored the gardens around the Manor. The only person for Mary to talk to was Martha, the manor’s cheerful, youngest servant. Martha told Mary about her mother and younger brother Dickon about people in the neighborhood, about some secrets of the manor.
It is not surprising that Mary and Dickon soon made friends. Dickon was a very unusual boy. He loved and understood animals and birds and often saved them when they got into troubles. Mary learned about the garden closed ten years ago. It was a garden of Lord Craven’s wife. After her death the inconsolable husband buried the key in the flowerbed. But a robin helped Mary to find the key and the girl could get into the secret garden. Mary did some work in the garden together with Dickon and the children revived the garden. They weeded the ground, planted some flowers, cut some bushes. Now it was their common secret.
By chance Mary learned that in the Manor lived her cousin. Poor sick little Colin Craven! He was very weak and unable to walk. In addition, he was irritable and often threw tantrums. Mary’s friendship and attention helped Colin to overcome his weakness. Mary told Colin about the secret garden and he desired to see it as soon as possible. Thus the three children came into the garden. It was in blossom! Every visit to the garden made Colin stronger and stronger. There, in the garden of his mother, Colin began to walk.
On the distance Lord Craven felt that something had happened in the Manor. He arrived home, entered the secret garden and saw his son could walk and looked like any other healthy child. It was a real happy end of the novel.
With the help of Dickon Mary found a way to bring love back to her new family.
“The Secret Garden” is a brilliant book about friendship, sympathy and a little of magic.
